How to succeed as a scrapbooking designer, artist, or consultant

Commercial Licenses and Piracy

When working with digital scrapbooking kits it is important to know and understand the permitted use of each kit or digital element you are using in your business. If the graphics you have purchased from designers were not labeled as commercial use then they are assumed to be personal use only. This means you can use them on your own pages but not for customers who are paying you to design their pages.

Copyright infringement is a serious crime and could cause you to lose a great deal of money as well as respect and your reputation. Digital designers today make kits that are specifically for commercial use and those are the types of graphics you should be purchasing for your scrap 4 hire business. for more information on copyright issues go to our government’s Copyright Office website.

Another thing to be aware of is that every designer is different and not all commercial licenses are the same. You must read every line of the license on every kit and be sure you only use it in the way it is intended. Should you be unclear on any point then it is best to contact the designer an have them clarify for you exactly what the specific clause is. Be sure to keep all correspondence (email, chat, etc.) with any designer so that you have records of conversations and so that you do not have to worry about future reprocussions.

Another area of concern in the digital community is that of piracy. There are people and sites that dedicate themselves to sharing digital products they have purchased. Piracy is the theft, reproduction, or redistribution of a copyrighted work without the permission or knowledge of the creator/copyright holder. This simply means you purchased the product(s) and ONLY you can use them unless the creator/copyright holder give you specific permission otherwise. A terrific place for information on digital piracy is Jen Strange’s Digital Piracy Blog.
